Understanding the MMIP Crisis
Gain a deeper understanding of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis, its complex history, and the factors that have kept it in the shadows for too long. Learn how we can collectively bring greater focus to these critical issues.

The Crisis in Focus
The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis has been a devastating reality for Indigenous communities for generations. It is a profound issue that has been overlooked and underreported, leading to a pervasive lack of justice for victims and their families. This crisis encompasses missing persons, abductions, human trafficking, and homicides that disproportionately affect Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. Understanding its depth is the first step toward meaningful change.

A Movement for Justice
The Movement for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Justice confronts the complex conditions that place Indigenous people at risk, including systemic failures, social inequities, and community‑level challenges. Native women, girls, Two‑Spirit, transgender, and gender‑diverse people experience disproportionate harm due to gaps in public safety, limited resources, cycles of violence, and lack of accountability across systems. MMIP Justice calls for Indigenous‑led solutions that strengthen Tribal authority, support families, and address both prevention and response with honesty and care. We stand in solidarity until every missing person is accounted for, every family is supported, and our communities are safer and stronger.

Our Commitment to Prevention
The Muckleshoot Tribe and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribal Police Department (MITPD) are committed to preventing violence before it occurs and protecting the wellbeing of our community. Prevention means strengthening visibility and trust in public safety, supporting families and youth, addressing risk factors, and intervening early when concerns arise. MITPD works in partnership with Tribal programs, neighboring agencies, and community members to improve safety, respond with accountability, and reduce conditions that contribute to MMIP. Through proactive policing, community engagement, and culturally grounded approaches, we affirm that prevention is essential to justice and healing.
Leading the Way in MMIP Cold Case Investigations
The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Police Department is at the forefront of addressing the MMIP crisis. We have proudly established the nation's first MMIP cold case detective position within commissioned law enforcement. This dedicated role focuses exclusively on investigating unresolved MMIP cases, reviewing historical files, developing new leads, and collaborating across jurisdictions to pursue accountability. By prioritizing cold cases, MIT PD ensures that victims are not forgotten and that families receive continued investigative attention. Our commitment is to justice and healing for all affected.
